Active Defense: Are Security Experts Making Noise Just to Be Heard or Are They Really Ready to Take Action; and What Impact will the Auernheimer Decision Have?

A lot of noise has been made lately about hack back, active defense, cyber self-defense, or what amounts to this question: should companies be able to hack back to deal with all of the cyber attacks they are currently facing?  Well, it depends?  But that is another discussion.  My question is what will the Auernheimer decision do to the theories of the security professionals who seem to advocate hack back?  Will they continue to advocate or quickly back off?

Active Defense at RSA Europe
At RSA Europe last week Davi Ottenheimer and I introduced our "Active Defense" package and how companies can take the fight to the hackers beyond their network.  Vigilantism?  No!  But you decide.  Here is the link the write up in the UK Register:http://m.theregister.co.uk/2012/10/12/active_defence/, or see the whole article here.

Active Defense: Moving the Discussion Forward
Hacking has gotten more prevalent.  Businesses are under constant attack.  Current defenses aren't working.  More options are needed.  Active defense is one option and the discussion regarding the concerns needs to be started and moved forward.

Active Defense: “We are the Government; We are here to help.” Well, not so much
Companies persistently attacked cannot rely on the government for help.  Let’s face it, if the government was going to and could help you they would. But like most companies they too are overwhelmed defending against a daily barrage of cyber-attacks. So, what‘s the answer? Continue to absorb escalating costs of operation caused by unrelenting hackers? Accept the loss of proprietary data, intellectual property or trade secrets and consequently millions of dollars and reputation?  At what point should the good guys declare enough is enough?

Much speculation has been swirling about who is responsible for many of the cyber attacks on the US.  At least until now.  In March Gen Alexander told Congress that China is responsible for a lot  of it, to include the attack on RSA.  SECDEF Panetta recently told ABC News what he believes constitutes an act of war in cyberspace.

As a law firm if you don't heed the warnings and take steps now to implement good cyber security and practices you may be the next headline.  Hackers are considering law firms as the soft target and backdoor to their clients and stealing what they can.  Take action now.
